Agate is a common rock formation, consisting of chalcedony and quartz as its primary components and is found in a wide variety of colours. Decorative uses of agates are known to date back to Ancient Greece and used most commonly as decorative objects or jewelry.  Medicinally it was known to ancient Egyptians and Greeks, as well as in parts of Africa, Middle East and Russia.
